The Grumbach lab studies cellular signaling pathways that affect vascular wall physiology and disease. In particular, we are interested in signaling regulators that integrate increased Calcium- and reactive oxygen species-dependent signaling. Some of our work focuses on the role of the multifunctional Ca2+/calmodulin dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) in smooth muscle and endothelial function. The laboratory work ranges from elucidating signaling pathways controlled by CaMKII to systems physiology using genetically modified mice. We are part of the state-of-the-art Pappajohn Discovery Institute, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center and the Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Iowa.
We are looking for a motivated young scientist who is interested in studying mitochondrial function in vascular disease. In particular, we are focusing on the regulation of Ca2+ uptake by mitochondria and mitochondrial dysfunction in type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cancer therapy-induced vascular disease. We use an array of in vivo and in vitro models to interrogate disease-relevant hypotheses. The successful candidate will have access to in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo research models, as well as various research techniques and advanced equipment.
We welcome talented and committed candidates with a recent PhD with a strong background in either vascular pharmacology/physiology or molecular biology and genetic models of vascular diseases. There will be ample opportunity to acquire new skills during the fellowship. Experience in vivo models of vascular diseases, molecular cloning, micro-dissection, cell culture, Ca2+ imaging, histology/immunohistochemistry is desirable. A MD with research experience and strong commitment to scientific endeavor will also be considered for the position. The successful candidate is expected to qualify for training grants and postdoctoral fellowships.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
- Working as a leader as well as part of one or more project teams, and remain proficient in designing, managing and performing experiments.
- Collecting and analyzing data, and deliver experimental research reports when necessary with guidance from the PIs for collaborative research projects
- With guidance from the PI to produce scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and to present research data in house and in scientific conferences.
